Disclaimer: After this tournament we realized that the 2nd place player was using Luke's Protection on Finn the entire 4 rounds of the SC. He would have definitely lost to this deck and one other had we been wise to his shenanigans. Oh well, fool me once, right? The player has been put on a watch list for future tournaments in the area.

Also after playing 2 casual games after the SC against the first place player (eRex/Maz/Clone) and winning pretty handily I feel like this deck was the "de jure" store champion. Anyways, the report!

I chose this deck because I have always enjoyed playing it since I first discovered it way back when I started playing Destiny at the beginning of the year. WotF has provided some decent improvements such as Mandalorian Vambraces over Hunting Rifle and the addition of Triple Threat to the mitigation suite. I made a personal choice of removing Friends in Low Places for added consistency and it never felt bad throughout my games.

What really makes this deck excel right now is the abundance of 3-wide decks. Weaker enemy characters means a deadlier Bala, and with the abundance of mill and the strength of damage inherent in this team's character dice Bala can survive the entire game and we can get 6+ upgrades out to deal a finishing blow with Free-For-All.

ROUND ONE: Win vs. eSabine/Clone Trooper

One of my local teammates would sit across from me in round one. I have to admit, Planetary Uprising with Sabine is very annoying and I have occasionally struggled against this deck in the past. My gameplan was simple: kill Clone Trooper before Bala dies and then rain hell down on Sabine. His Sabine rolls were decent, but Witch Magick, Force Illusion, and mitigation on the Sabine rerolls kept Bala alive long enough for Talzin to take the reins after his death. The one time he had enough money for a second gun, I Vandalized it. Uprising proved to not be too big of a deal as he only managed to get one out on round 2. Fairly close, but I came out on top.

ROUND TWO: Win vs. 5-wide Battle Droids

Yikes. Bala's wet dream. I felt bad for my opponent, who also happened to be 8 years old. I was amazed, however, at his knowledge of the game and his composure in what was essentially a worst-case scenario.

He got out a first round Aftermath, but I just had to Vandalize it on my next action. I managed to kill 1 droid the first round, and 2 the second, and ... the rest is history. He had some decent rolls but my mitigation took care of it. He also couldn't get any big vehicles down which definitely would have knocked out Bala. I admire his deck choice, and I hope this kid, his brother, and his father remain part of our local Destiny scene because they are an awesome team!

ROUND THREE: Loss vs. eFinn2/eYoda

Here it is, the one where my dumb face forgets Luke's Protection can only give Blue characters a shield. It would have been a relatively quick win, but instead turned into a slugfest of Finn specials, Mend, Field Medic, and 2 shields on Finn every turn.

He got an early Force Wave out on Yoda, which forced me to focus him down first because Wave is probably my greatest nightmare in the current meta. I couldn't deploy enough mitigation to prevent the 2 wave specials he got through, however he focused on Talzin until Yoda died, allowing me to ready Bala and then heal Talzin back up. Bala died, then FOST. I got one Free-for-All off but I just couldn't surmount the litany of shields and healing. I think Finn ended with 8 damage on him. There was one round where he used Mend, Field Medic, a Finn special, and 2 shields from Protection to put the game out of reach.

ROUND FOUR: Win vs. eYoda/Cassian/Anakin2

Just what I was hoping, final round mill. This game alone made me feel better for not getting the 1st place title I deserved. Everyone by now knows the tricks of the "Millpocalypse" so I'll make a quick summary: He didn't protect little Ani early, so I was able to ready Bala in round 2 with 3 upgrades on. The first Anakin Skywalker's Podracer got Vandalized after resolving once. He played his second copy later, but it wasn't enough to make a difference.

Yoda was my next target, as he couldn't be saved by Second Chance and he has two dice. Despite a Force Illusion I made fairly easy work of the little green goblin. Getting a Frighten to remove 3 shields was a big play as well. Another important note, it seemed that all of my least useful cards were getting lost to his mill - x2 Illusion and x2 Magick took a hit for the team. Getting a The Best Defense... off once was huge, but the other one got milled.

To end the game I Free-For-All'd six dice then hit his Cassian with Backup Muscle for the final blow.

I managed to Probe one of his Hyperspace Jump from his hand, but he still managed to play both thanks to Rebel. Oh well. With all the 's 5DV has I rarely needed to discard to reroll.

IMPORTANT CARDS: Free-For-All: An awesome card, great finisher, although it feels bad pulling it in the first couple rounds. Finished 2 games with it.

Witch Magick: Only running 2 even cards meant I was hitting this every single time I played it. A life saver in every game (except vs. mill obviously).

Probe: Some may disagree with my decision to remove x2 FILP and rely entirely upon Probe and sides for hand disruption, but it felt great the entire tournament and I only whiffed with Probe once. Just make sure you wait to see if your opponent will play upgrades/supports first before you take the risk. That alone raises the floor on this card, and removing 2 mitigation or something like Hyperspace Jump feels awesome.

Triple Threat: A very versatile card, which gets a lot of its value from rerolling opponent's dice, although I did once play it on 3 of my own dice just to guarantee some damage for a kill. Just remember you have to reroll 3 dice to be able to turn one. I'm on the fence as to whether this should be a x2

Tactical Mastery: Not sure if x2 was the way to go, as FOST can die quick if we get a Best Defense off. However it helps against the heavy mitigation some decks run. You'll always want to use the two actions to 1) activate Talzin then 2) resolve damage.

Vandalize: With 5 character dice there's really no reason not to run this card. Use your less favorable dice rolls to knock out your opponent's most important cards. Great against Force Speed and Anakin Skywalker's Podracer.

That's it guys, my first deck report! I hope it wasn't too long-winded. I'm wide-open to criticism and opinions so please make your voice heard!

Oh, and for those who may think the competition wasn't very strong, our reigning regional champion got 5th with Kylo/Snoke and there were a few other meta decks amongst the standings.

Drop it like it's Hutt 166

Nice report and very helpful explanation of your changes. You're right, Mandalorian Vambraces is a great addition from the new set.
