I used this deck in the first week of our League Play (Fantasy Shop, St. Charles, MO) last Sunday. Our league has objectives week to week that gain you points over the play period of October. Before I go into the logic of the deck, here were the objectives:

  1. Skywalker Family Nightmare: Play a deck with two Skywalkers (somehow). This could include Kylo, Vader, Luke, and Leia, of course, but also Han and Padme since they "married into" the bloodline. Rey didn't count though. (2 points)
  2. They Would Have Disappointed You: Have a parent character defeat their child or have the child defeat their parent (example: either Darth Vader defeats Luke or Leia or vice versa)….3 points
  3. Now I am the Master: Have an apprentice or master defeat their apprentice or master. (Example: Qui-Gonn vs. Dooku, Vader vs. Obi-wan, Kylo vs. Luke, Palpatine vs. Vader, Luke vs. Obi-wan) (2 points)
  4. If You Strike Me Down: Play the card Rise Again once if you have a Villain deck and one of your characters has been defeated. Play the card One with the Force if you have a Hero deck after one of your characters has been defeated. (5 points, with 2 Bonus points if the card One with the Force becomes a support)
  5. Hey! That’s Mine!: Use your character’s signature force power, weapon, vehicle, or die associated with any of the items aforementioned against your opponent’s character. (example: Crossguard Lightsaber for Kylo, Force Lightning for Emperor Palpatine, DL-44 or Millenium Falcon for Han Solo) (4 Points)

Clearly, if you wanted to have a chance at all of these, you almost had to go either EmoBros or Han/Leia. (You could also go BigVader / Kylo, without elite Vader, or 2 dice starts with Han/Leia/Luke/Padme.) I chose EmoBros mainly because I wanted to try out Darth Vader's TIE Advanced. I could have accomplished objective #5 with Force Choke instead, but this seemed more fun.

Given that I'm playing for the TIE, I need resources, so I stocked up on ways to get them along with the Meditate package to deal with the blanks (hence, Datapad). Thankfully the Crossguard Lightsaber and Ancient Lightsaber help on the resources. I originally wanted to run Inquisitor's Saber, but opted for the Force Push instead, knowing full well that it might never come out save for Rise Again, but so what it gets the blanks! The Datapad also can help get your special for Vader's TIE.

A cute trick I wanted to try, but didn't do in the league play, was to get better than 50% damage on a dude (with my BF out), claim with Vader's TIE out, then immediately challenge them next turn with Vader's TIE roll-in then claim as the next action for a Throne-Room-to-special victory.

The events package is rather standard but I augmented typical EmoBros material with the new Lightsaber Pull and a couple of 2PG events: Your Skills Are Complete and Clash. Really just wanted to try these out, and they actually did make a difference. Clash is soft removal, but the upside of turning one of your dice makes it worth it.

How did it perform? Overall it went 3-1. It beat Han-Leia, BigVader-NewKylo (single dice each, unusual!), and Vader-Magnaguard. It lost to another EmoBros...

Game 1 vs Han-Leia. I started with Vader's TIE in my hand plus Enrage, so with a resource roll from Kylo I deployed the TIE on the first turn. We traded damage but eventually I got 5 on Han, then Vader's TIE took him down (accomplishing Objective 5). Leia was pretty resilient, but I eventually got 5 damage on her, then used Vader's TIE special for another 5, then overwrote with a Crossguard Saber to deal the final damage and accomplish Objective 2 (kid defeats parent).

Game 2 vs Vader-Kylo. With a single die on each of his characters, I had no trouble getting my battlefield and opened with Force Speed and a saber (I think). Kylo guessed successfully a couple of times to do some good damage, but he couldn't keep up with my ever-expanding dice pool. I didn't get any of the objectives here.

Game 3 vs eVader-Magnaguard This is a cool new archetype that this league member really likes to play. Endless Ranks and Rise Again together make for a difficult to stop combo. Ultimately, you have to hit Vader first, but I mistakenly went after Magnaguard initially. I rolled extremely favorably this round, and him not so much. It really could have gone either way, but it was fun nevertheless. Highlights included the Magnaguard getting resurrected once, a massive Feel Your Anger removal play from me, and a double-special from babyVader.

Game 4 vs EmoBros This was a knock-down-drag out fight to the finish, and I think he won with 1 health remaining. Typical EmoBros game, with lots of damage flying around. Clash made a BIG play here, turning his 3for1 damage to a blank and my blank to a +3 on a saber. I used Anger to good effect here, as well as Your Skills Are Complete.

In summary, it's a fun deck with some different cards than you might normally see, and it was great for the league. Next week I'll post the deck for our second challenge!
